In this lesson we learn how to use a map and compass in survival. It is important for us to use what we see in that we see in our surroundings as well as our instincts to help us to navigate. Here, you'll learn how to use your compass and your instincts to guide you from one point on your map to the next.

You'll need the following items for the practical:

• A 1:50 000 scale map of your area usually available online. In South Africa you can order them from the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development.

• A compass; either a lensatic or base plate compass.

• A protractor, a square one works best.

• A pencil.

• Some walking shoes.
